What are the Shiny Things? – When the light hits them we can see nothing else… They draw us on, regardless of the consequences… and when the light goes out, they are all we remember. Nine teenagers delight the audience with a hilarious mix of storytelling, music, and paper magic in Shiny Things; Southern Edge Art’s latest offering!

In a town where nothing ever happens, a camera, a magpie and a series of dreams conspire to make a change. And when change occurs, whether it happens to you or you make it happen, sometimes it is best not to think about it… until you’re dead.

For six months in 2007 twelve young people from SEA, between the ages of fourteen to twenty years, worked with Australia’s Award winning writer, Director Lockie McDonald to write Shiny Things. The result was twelve interconnecting tales that burst out of the mouths of young people who have grown up on the beaches of the mighty Great Southern Ocean.

In October 2008, Shiny Things, repolished by SEA’s Artistic Director, Simon Clarke, hits the road with a tour of southern Western Australia, taking in Katanning (1st Oct), Bridgetown (2nd Oct), Bunbury (4th Oct), Ravensthorpe (18th Oct) and a repeat season in Albany (16th & 17th Oct).

“The tour is a fantastic opportunity for our young members to celebrate the work they have created, tell their stories and connect with communities who share similar experiences” says Clarke. “It’s also important for SEA to stretch its boundaries geographically, and test is relevance to and commonalities of experience with other regional communities”

The Ravensthorpe section of the tour has been assisted through funding from BHP Billiton Nickel West which will also see a series of drama & performance workshops delivered to the Ravensthorpe community.
