MILLION PUPPET PROJECT (an initiative of
Spare Parts Puppet Theatre), as part of
UNIMA 2008, and is proud to announce that we will be hosting international mask-maker, puppeteer, performance artist and teacher
Deborah Hunt for two weeks of workshops in February, 2008.
UNIMA 2008 is the 20th UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) World Puppetry Festival and for the first time is being held in the Southern Hemisphere. From February 16th to March 2nd, Deborah will be running workshops for the members of Southern Edge Arts – building masks and puppets – to culminate in a performance and procession to the SEA!

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
The workshops will be split into 3 groups: Group 1: SEA Members aged 11—14 years Group 2: SEA Members aged 5 - 10 years Group 3: SEA Members aged 14 years plus
In addition to the workshops a rehearsal day is scheduled for Saturday 1st March (times TBC) for all groups.
As participants will be both making and learning to perform with their masks & puppets during the workshops, it is desirable that they be able to attend all workshops for their group.
Deborah will also be hosting workshops for adults/local artists on Sunday 17th Feb 11am - 5pm, Wednesday's 20th and 27th Feb 11am - 3pm.
PUPPET PROCESSION
The BIG FINALE of the workshops will be a PUPPET PROCESSION to the SEA on Sunday 2nd March. This will take place from EYRE PARK to MIDDLETON BEACH and back, and will be followed by a CELEBRATORY BBQ for everyone involved! More details coming soon...

Theatre Design with Claude Marcos

Southern Edge Arts is excited to host professional set designer Claude Marcos for a week of intensive workshops! Members from Open Access Arts Studio, along with members from SEA, will have the opportunity to partake in a weeklong theatre design series: Design as Performance: Visual interpretation of a Text.
In addition, Southern Edge Arts is opening up a second series of workshops for local practising artists who are interested in participating.
Since leaving WAAPA Claude has set himself as one of the leading theatre designers in perth and has worked along side a number of Australias great theatre practitioners. In 2007 Claude was awarded an ArtsWA grant to participate in the Prague Quadrinelle, were he workshopped with leading European Scenographer Jean Guy-Leacat, as well as attended lectures by Richard Hudon (designer of the Lion King), Micheal levine (candian designer/ director) and Pamela Howard (Professor in Scenography).
Throughout Claude’s career he has designed a broad range of shows which have included, Marart/Sade, Crazy for you and The Tempest for WAAPA, Cloudstreet by Tim Winton for the WA youth theatre Company. Ubu Roi, Wind in the Willows, Trojan Women and Cinderella, as part of a residency program at the Hayman Theatre Curtin University, Woyzeck for the Black Swan BSX Hotbed program, A Moment on the Lips for Red Ryder productions, The Goat or who is Sylvia and Loveplay for Perth Theatre Company, Run Kitty Run a schools touring show for Barking Gecko Theatre Company, The Goose Chase, a new devised piece for ThinIce in co-operation with Deck Chair Theatre Company which will tour in the 2008 Singapore Arts Festival and Honour for Black Swan’s main house season.
Design as performance: Visual interpretation of a text is a four day workshop focusing on understanding the role of theatre design in contemporary performance. This workshop is aimed at helping participants understand the basics of stage design but more specifically attempts to highlight the power gained from understanding how a visual and spatial understanding of text can truly inform the direction of a production.

ABOUT VISIBLEDANCE
A new contemporary dance company. Located in Perth, Western Australia, Visible Dance comprises a corp of brillant dancers trained at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Visible Dance's primary focus is to revitalise the audience for contemporary dance. Theybelieve that right now, contemporary dance is simply too inaccessible and too hard to find With a range of strategies to introduce contemporary dance to new audiences, promote it with new technologies, and take it to a few places it's never been, we are about to make it a whole lot easier to be into dance in Perth.
Artistic Director Pamela Konijn (24)
Pamela is an accomplished contemporary choreographer and dancer with an extensive background in teaching all levels, and designing rewarding and fun workshops. She has worked with dance companies and schools in urban and regional areas, in Australia and the USA. Pamela has an inspiring passion for contemporary dance and believes in making it truly relevant to dancers and audiences alike.
Company Dancer Elyse Huxtable (21) One of our top dancers, Elyse is trained in both commercial and contemporary dance forms, and is an experienced performer and choreographer. She presently performs with Visible Dance, and also works with premier hip-hop outfit Dance2XS. An athletic and highenergy dancer, Elyse creates challenging and exciting programmes for her workshops.
