CIRCASEA @ Circus Joseph Ashton

Southern Edge Art’s youth circus performance group CircaSea, ran away to join the circus for a week for an experience of a life time!

CircaSea is Southern Edge Arts (SEA) own circus performance group, made up of young people aged 12 to 18 who regularly perform throughout the Great Southern. Through this trip, 10 of its members expanded their circus skills and developed more exciting and awe-inspiring acts. CircaSea were invited by the renowned Circus Joseph Ashton to spend a week training and experiencing the day-to-day life of a professional traveling circus whilst they are were set up and performing in Rockingham over the September/October school holidays.

They also be undertook extra intensive training with circus professionals: Renee Pilkington and Scott Craig (from Fliptease), and Nel Simpson (from WA circus school).

CircaSEA member’s Cassandra Turner (15 years old) and Isabel Bush (14 years old) successfully applied for a YCulture Regional Grant, through Country Arts WA and Healthway to assist in the costs of the training. “The experiences we have already had, and will have during the week in Rockingham, have and will be fantastic. Writing the grant, and working in the planning process, has given us vast knowledge, and will help us in the future” says Cassandra. YCulture is a Healthway youth arts fund designed to promote the Drug Aware message and is available to support young people make their own youth arts and culture projects happen, with a focus on youth skills development.

“We would like to thank YCulture and SEA, as this could not happen without their support. The trip is proudly sponsored by Country Arts WA and by Healthway to promote the Drug Aware message” said Isabel.

Artistic Director Simon Clarke says “ it really is an outstanding reward for the youth showing such enthusiasm and dedication to an artform, and the skills that they will learn during this intensive training will be capitalised on within SEA’s 25th Anniversary program next year, with a circus and physical theatre extravaganza planned for mid 2010.”

Diafrix’s urban music mixes traditional African rhythms with funk, ragga, soul and hip hop. With no swearing policy they will not offend but educate people through their flow. This is positive Hip Hop with a cultural bent.

Diafrix have established themselves over the last five years as one of Australia’s most exciting and original live acts. There’s no recycled funk here - it’s 100% original soul, dancehall and reggae-infused hip hop. Fronted by African-born MCs Azmarino and Momo and backed up by Haitian goddess Nadee. With lavish organic productions from Ptero_Stylus and cuts from Wax Vandal, Diafrix know how to get the party started…!

Born in Footscray, Melbourne, at the cafe that bears their name, Diafrix represent the motherland of Africa and refugees from all corners of the globe. They present a fresh honest look at the world and life in Australia.

Establishing themselves on the Australian music scene since they took out Triple J’s Next Crop Award in 2005, Diafrix have performed at The Big Day Out, West Coast Blues & Roots Festival, Falls Festival and Meredith.

Their last release "In Tha Place" was picked up by Triple J and Channel V and the group have been working on their debut full length album due for release later in 2008. The group connect with their audience in the most fundamental ways with soulful music and tight rhymes. Diafrix are one mighty fresh hip-hop crew with global appeal.

Diafrix are touring Australia from February 2009, with Southern Edge Arts kicking off the WA leg with an all ages gig on Sunday 22nd February with special guests – local act Down South Crew (DSC). A workshop for ages 9+ will follow on Monday 23rd Feb at Southern Edge Arts.

The Presentation of DIAFRIX is proudly supported by Kultour: touring multicultural arts, changing Australian culture - an initiative of the Australia Council for the Arts. The Contemporary Music Touring Program aims to give all Australians, wherever they live, better access to some of the country’s best live contemporary music. The Australian Government is proud to be associated with the Kultour tour of DIAFRIX.

SEA's SPRUNG!

THE PLAY'S THE THING...

9.30 to 11.30am
Friday 18th September
Venue: Wisdom @ The Vancouver Arts Centre
Cost: $30
Bookings: Albany Town Hall

Mary Rachel Brown brings her special playwright skills to Sprung this year. "Plays are controlled experiments in human behaviour," Mary says. "A playwright mixes characters and situations, just like a physicist mixes chemicals and elements. Explosions cannot be ruled out!" Mary's workshop on Friday from 9.30-11.30am will provide a tool box for building detailed characters. The seeds of narrative can be found in a character's deepest desires, needs and contradictions. Bring a pen, paper and curiosity about the human psyche. Book through the Town Hall Box Office.

Mary will be staying on at SEA, with thanks to a grant from Express Media's Write in Your Face program, for a 2 week residency, working with our youth members to develop a series of short plays. You can check out some of the works in progress on our project blog: http://www.southernedge.org.au/blog
