SEA and THE CHIPOLATAS at the Albany Entertainment Centre

INTER-BEING - SEA
a retrospective of some of SEA's recent performances

Saturday, 21 April 2012
Albany Entertainment Centre, 7.30pm

Just two weeks after the thrilling performances of Carnivale D'Mar as part of the Festival of the Sea, Southern Edge Arts has been invited to perform  at the Albany Entertainment Centre, supporting the amazing Chipolatas, celebrating 20 years on the Road. In recognition of their remarkable achievement Southern Edge Arts will be performing a retrospective of our own recent productions.

INTER-BEING weaves together energetic, contemporary dance, exquisit aerial circus, exciting physical theatre and elegant puppetry to tell a story of human development, interconnectedness and achievement. Incorporating past hit shows such as Heaven and Hell, Café Shakespeare, The Colour of Forgetting, Spider’s Web and various other developments, Inter-being refreshes the ideas and routines previously explored by previous young members as the current young performers make them their own and adapt them to fit the stage at the Albany Entertainment Centre.
“We are thrilled to be able to present our work alongside a group like The Chipolatas” said SEA Artistic Director Simon Clarke, “We have been fortunate enough to have them deliver workshops for us in the past and we hope that this show will demonstrate that, even though those workshops were fleeting, their sense of humour, performance and respectful, irreverent fun has made it’s mark on our company.”

2011 Christmas Pageant

Southern Edge Arts entertained the crowds at this years Christmas pageant with their wacky and wonderful costumes. Performers were dressed in steampunk as they hunted down the terrifying Kraken. Even in the mists of the hunt they displayed their amazing circus skills and tricks. Performing death defying balances and extraordinary acrobatics they continued to entice and entertain the audience.

Kraken Bounty Hunters, Steampunkers and freaks were roving around Middleton Beach at Christmas time displaying their timeless talents for the general Public's amusement

Great characters were discovered during the workshops and have been elaborated on further in our Carnival newspaper, The Seafarer's Straight (see previous).

2011 Albany Show

This year the SEA dancers performed at the Albany Show. Choreographed by Sam in collaboration with the students the dance looks at the devastation and destruction that occurred during the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The dancers showed this theme by exploring the 4 elements: earth, water, air and fire. The last section featured our senior ballet students as spirits left drifting amongst the ruins.

CircaSEA at Perth Royal Show

SEA was invited to perform at the Perth Royal Show as part of the City of Albany’s Guest Town exhibition. Circus Trainer, Beth O’Neill, and a handful of the circus kids developed a twenty-minute performance and hosted workshops teaching  different types of manipulation from hula-hoops to juggling over the first weekend of the Show (October 1st and 2nd). The performance was based on an urban/street comedy theme, containing a mix of manipulation, tumbling, adagio and slapstick. As ever, our crew did us all proud and our demonstration added colour, vibrancy and fun to the Albany exhibition, as we do in Albany itself.
